- The group had a message asking to vote for a child in an art contest.
- I checked and saw the message was from someone I knew from a startup.
- The domain was in the EU.
- The title was in Ukrainian.
What alerted me:
- The main menu was in Russian.
- To vote, you had to log in through Telegram.
I decided to vote. The site asked for a Telegram code. I hadn’t logged into sites via Telegram for a while, so it seemed strange, but I couldn’t remember how it used to be. I decided to vote and revoke the session later.
Furthermore, I got distracted talking to my son, and we walked. When we returned, I remembered to revoke the session.
I opened Telegram, and I was asked to enter my phone number and a code from an SMS. I logged in, my account was empty.
The mistake was clear. Someone got my login details and verification code and then deleted my account. It was very unpleasant. I contacted Telegram support to restore my account. 24 hours later, I still haven’t received a response.
I had Telegram Desktop at home on my laptop, hoping my chats were still there. However, the laptop had synchronized in the background, and my account was logged out.
- What next:
- I’ll try to contact Telegram support to restore my account.
- Set up everything anew.
Many things were lost on Telegram. However, I don’t see a reason to be upset. I’ll start anew and hope it will be even better.
Conclusions:
What I can do to prevent problems if I loose my telegrma account?
- Duplicate all contacts to my phone.
- Have another admin with all permisions in important groups.
- Don’t use Telegram as the only place for information.
- There is no support in Telegram.
Try to find some helpful information about security on the telegram website.
My experience with the loss of a Telegram account shows how important it is to have reliable support in such situations
